Traditional Dry-Stack Stone Walls:
Stone masonry originated with dry-stacked stonework where the walls are
carefully layed up without mortar. Gravity serves as the glue that holds
everything together. Free-standing dry-stack stone walls are usually made larger
at the base and then taper in slowly as the height increases. For absolutely no
expense but the labor, farmers built miles upon miles of stone fences this way
in Ireland and in the northeastern states.
Many old Irish houses were built in a similar way. Where "mortar" was used, it
was often merely mud or limestone plasters with little strength. The mortar
functioned as caulking to stop the flow of air, rather than as cement to bond
the stones together. Short, dry-stacked stone walls are especially ideal for
landscaping projects. Taller walls require more skill and time. For more details
on dry-stack stone walls, be sure to check out Building Stone Walls and
Stonework: Techniques and Projects.
Traditional Mortared Stone Walls:
Mortared stone walls evolved out of dry-stack stone work with the emergence of
cement mortars. The first cements were made of burnt gypsum or lime mixed with
water to make a paste with slight bonding capability. Stone walls still had to
be built as carefully as they were without mortar. The cement paste just filled
the gaps between the stones and cured to form a soft, rock-like substance.
The basic formula for modern cement originated in England in 1824. It is called
"Portland cement" because the color is similar to the rocks on the English
island of Portland. It is still called Portland cement everywhere in the world
it is manufactured. This cement is made with calcium from limestone or chalk,
plus alumina and silica from clay and shale. The ingredients are ground, mixed
in the right proportions and burnt in a kiln at a temperature of about 2500
degrees F (1350ªC) to drive out water bound up in the raw materials. In the kiln
it fuses into chunks called clinker. It is cooled and powdered, and gypsum is
added to control how fast it sets up. Portland cement is mixed with sand and
water, and often lime to make a smooth mortar for stone and brick work. Adding
the lime makes the mortar softer and more flexible.
With the aid of Portland cement it is possible to build a taller stone wall that
does not taper inward like a dry-stacked wall. The cement has some ability to
"glue" a stone wall together with less care, but proper stoneworking techiques
are still important. Building a free-standing stone wall is a true art and
requires a lot of time and skill to do it well. For more details on traditional
mortared stone walls, be sure to check out Building with Stone.
Veneered Stone Walls:
Most stonework today consists of a non-structural veneer
of stone against a structural wall of concrete or cinderblock. Concrete consists
of Portland cement mixed with sand, gravel and water. The larger particles of
gravel interlock like little fingers to make the concrete resistant to cracking.
Steel reinforcing bar can be added to serve as much longer "fingers" to make a
wall that is very resistant to cracking. Concrete is a fast and relatively
inexpensive way to put up a structural wall, so few people take the time for
labor intensive traditional mortared stone walls any more.
Instead, the structural wall is put up first, and thin, flat stones are
essentially glued onto the face of the wall with cement mortar. Metal tabs in
the structural wall are mortared in between the stones to tie everything
together, otherwise the stonework would just peel right off the wall. The
structural wall serves as a form on one side of the wall to make it really easy
to lay up the stonework, provided the rocks have good flat edges to work with.

Types of Projects
Fireplaces & Stove Backings
Fireplaces and stoves can represent both a picture of strength and warmth in
your home. A fireplace is a great gathering spot for friends and family and
can provide the perfect reading or relaxing spot on a cold winter night.
Fireplaces can also stand out as the unique centerpiece to a room, and
Designer Properties thrives on building the most beautiful and breathtaking
fireplaces you can dream.
Retaining Walls & House Sidings
Using stone on outdoor construction can make any structure feel natural and
beautiful. Designer Properties has used stone to face walls and homes for 30
years, and knows the impact it can have on making any house or business feel
well planned and grounded.
Entryway Pillars
What better way to mark the entry to your home than with stone pillars.
Pillars are used to identify many different landmarks, and can add presence
and attraction to your home or business. When designing your driveway, think
about what part stone could play to mark your entryway.
Walkways and Patios
Any path or patio can be enhanced by the use of stone. These projects can be
completed with the use of mortar or by simply setting the stones in the
ground. Cement patios or walkways can be faced with stone and mortar for a
classic look, while dirt or sand pathways and patios can be lined with stone
by digging out the shapes of the rocks and lying in stones so that they lay
flat against the ground.
Landscaping with Stone
Using stone in commonly visited areas outside your home can add beauty to
any landscape. Stone can be used to sculpt any formed landscape to feel
natural. Stone can also be used to accent any gathering area, and looks
especially good around patios and walkways.
Other Creations
Almost any setting or structure can be improved with the correct use of
stone. Over the years Designer Properties has used stone to face barbeques,
planters, stairways, pools, and many other projects with beautiful results.
Whatever your architectural plans, consider stone for beautiful results.
Stone Laying Techniques
Classic
Classic stonework has visible mortar joints between the rocks. This
technique is achieved by parging mortar to the back of the rock and the wall
it will be attached to, along with a thin layer between each rock. After
setting and drying, the joints between the rocks are struck to an even
amount of visible mortar. The joints are then brushed and washed with a
sponge for the smoothest finish. Joints can be struck at different distances
for different effect, but the main purpose of stonework is to see the stones
themselves. For this reason, the joints should be kept thin and not distract
from the rocks themselves. As with any good rockwork, the mortar joints are
a great way to observe the quality of the stonework at hand.
Dry Stack
The dry stack technique is both impressive in its visual appeal and
composure. The central idea of the technique is setting rocks with no
visible mortar joints. This is accomplished through meticulous picking and
choosing of rocks that fit together perfectly. Mortar is still used behind
the rocks, and the structure is just as secure as the classic look, but the
overall visual effect is quite different. The dry stack look requires much
more time and effort than the classic look because of the extra number of
rocks that must be collected in order to find shapes that fit together
tightly. The actual laying of the rocks also requires more time for precise
fitting. The end result is quite stunning because it has the look of rocks
that simply sit on top of one another without the support of mortar.
Mosaic
The basic technique involves using rocks of different shape and color to
build a mosaic picture or symbol into the structure being created. It could
range anywhere from a mountain range, to different types of trees, to a
meaningful symbol built into the structure of your project. Mosaic stonework
could be built in a classic or dry stack look. Depending on the type of
project, the physical structure could also be build to reflect the picture
being set into the creation. Mosaic pictures can add meaning and uniqueness
of even the most basic structure.

Introduction to San
Antonio-Austin,
Texas
One of Texas' most famous cities is the City of San Antonio-Austin. Located in the
south-central part of the state, San Antonio-Austin is Texas' second-largest city and
serves as an economic and cultural gateway to the American Southwest. The city
lies about 140 miles northwest of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico and 150
miles northeast of the city of Laredo on the Mexican border. Several major
freeways service the city, including Interstates I-10, I-35, I-37, and I-410;
U.S. Routes 87, 90, and 281; and Texas State Highways 16 and 151.
Named for Saint Anthony of Padua, on whose feast day (June 13) a Spanish
expedition explored the area in 1691, the San Antonio-Austin River was the principal
tributary which spawned the founding of its namesake village in 1718. The site,
on the river's west bank, was initially a stopping place on the Texas wilderness
trail leading to French trading posts in Louisiana. By 1731 the town was known
as San Antonio-Austin de Béxar, which in 1773 became the capital of Spanish Texas.
During the Texas Revolution, San Antonio-Austin was the site of several battles,
including the battle of the Alamo in 1836, in which 189 defenders held the old
Alamo mission for 13 days against some 4,000 Mexican troops. Although the
defenders were ultimately killed, the memorable phrase "Remember the Alamo"
became forever known as the rallying cry of the Texas Revolution against Mexico.
After the Civil War, San Antonio-Austin prospered as a cattle industry hub and military
center serving the border region and the Southwest. During the twentieth
century, San Antonio-Austin became an important military center for the Army and Air
Force through both world wars; a distinction which it has retained to this day.
San Antonio-Austin is the current home of Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base,
Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Stanley and Camp Bullis
located just outside the city limits
