Types of Concrete

Various types of concrete have been developed for specialist application and have become known by these names.

Regular concrete
Regular concrete is the lay term describing concrete that is produced by following the mixing instructions that are commonly published on packets of cement, typically using sand or other common material as the aggregate, and often mixed in improvised containers. This concrete can be produced to yield a varying strength from about 10 MPa to about 40 MPa, depending on the purpose, ranging from blinding to structural concrete respectively. Also, many types of pre-mixed concrete are available which include powdered cement mixed with an aggregate, needing only water.

High-strength concrete
High-strength concrete is concrete with a compressive strength generally greater than 6,000 pounds/square inch (40 MPa). High-strength concrete is made by lowering the water-cement ratio to 0.35 or lower. Often, silica fume is added to prevent the formation of free calcium hydroxide crystals in the cement matrix, which might reduce the strength at the cement-aggregate bond.

Low w/c ratios and the use of silica fume make concrete mixes significantly less workable, which is particularly likely to be a problem in high-strength concrete applications, where dense rebar cages are likely. To compensate for the reduced workability, superplasticizers are commonly added to high-strength mixtures. Aggregate must be selected carefully for high-strength mixes, as weaker aggregates may not be strong enough to resist the loads imposed on the concrete, and cause failure to start in the aggregate rather than in the matrix or at a void, as normally occurs in regular concrete.

In some applications of high-strength concrete, the design criterion is the elastic modulus rather than the ultimate compressive strength.

Stamped concrete

Stamped concrete is concrete that is patterned and/or textured to resemble Brick , Stone , Tile , Slate , Wood and various other patterns and textures. Stamped concrete is commonly used for Patios , Sidewalks, Driveways, and Floors. The ability of stamped concrete to resemble other building materials makes stamped concrete a less expensive alternative to using those other materials. There are three procedures used in stamped concrete which separate it from other concrete procedures; the addition of a base color, the addition of an accent color, and stamping a pattern into the concrete. These three procedures provide stamped concrete with a color and shape similar to the natural building material. Brick textured stamped concrete.

Adding base color

Adding base color The base color is the primary color used in stamped concrete. The base color is chosen to reflect the color of the natural building material. The base color is produced by adding a color hardener to the concrete. Color hardener is a powder pigment used to dye the concrete. The color hardener can be applied using one of two procedures; integral color or cast-on color. Integral color is the procedure where the entire volume of concrete is dyed the base color. The entire volume of concrete is colored by adding the color hardener to the concrete truck, and allowing all the concrete in the truck to be dyed. Cast-on color is the procedure where the surface of the concrete is dyed the base color. The surface of the concrete is colored by spreading the color hardener onto the surface of the wet concrete and floating the powder into the top layer of the wet concrete.

Adding accent color

Adding accent color The accent color is the secondary color used in stamped concrete. The secondary color is used to produce texture and show additional building materials (e.g. grout) in the stamped concrete. The accent color is produced by applying color release to the concrete. Color release has two purposes. Color release is a pigment used to color the concrete and color release is a non-adhesive used to prevent the concrete stamps from sticking to the concrete. The color release can be applied in one of two procedures; cast-on color release or spray-on color release. Cast-on color release is a procedure where the powder color release is applied by spreading the color release on the surface of the concrete before the concrete is stamped. Spray-on color release is a procedure where liquid color release is sprayed on the bottom of the concrete stamps before the concrete is stamped . Stamping patterns The pattern is the shape of the surface of the stamped concrete. The pattern reflects the shape of the natural building material. The pattern is made by imprinting the concrete shortly after it has been poured with a "concrete stamp". Concrete stamping is the procedure which uses the concrete stamps to make the pattern in the stamped concrete. Concrete stamps are placed on the concrete after the color release has been applied. The concrete stamps are pushed into the concrete and then removed to leave the pattern in the stamped concrete. Finally the next day we pressure wash off most of the Release and seal with a Great sealer.

Introduction to San Antonio-Austin, Texas

One of Texas' most famous cities is the City of San Antonio-Austin. Located in the south-central part of the state, San Antonio-Austin is Texas' second-largest city and serves as an economic and cultural gateway to the American Southwest. The city lies about 140 miles northwest of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico and 150 miles northeast of the city of Laredo on the Mexican border. Several major freeways service the city, including Interstates I-10, I-35, I-37, and I-410; U.S. Routes 87, 90, and 281; and Texas State Highways 16 and 151.

Named for Saint Anthony of Padua, on whose feast day (June 13) a Spanish expedition explored the area in 1691, the San Antonio-Austin River was the principal tributary which spawned the founding of its namesake village in 1718. The site, on the river's west bank, was initially a stopping place on the Texas wilderness trail leading to French trading posts in Louisiana. By 1731 the town was known as San Antonio-Austin de Béxar, which in 1773 became the capital of Spanish Texas. During the Texas Revolution, San Antonio-Austin was the site of several battles, including the battle of the Alamo in 1836, in which 189 defenders held the old Alamo mission for 13 days against some 4,000 Mexican troops. Although the defenders were ultimately killed, the memorable phrase "Remember the Alamo" became forever known as the rallying cry of the Texas Revolution against Mexico. After the Civil War, San Antonio-Austin prospered as a cattle industry hub and military center serving the border region and the Southwest. During the twentieth century, San Antonio-Austin became an important military center for the Army and Air Force through both world wars; a distinction which it has retained to this day. San Antonio-Austin is the current home of Fort Sam Houston, Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, and Brooks City-Base, with Camp Stanley and Camp Bullis located just outside the city limit
